Saju vs Western Astrology: What Is the Difference?

Saju is Korea’s traditional way of reading destiny from the cycle of time, while Western astrology reads the positions of the planets at the moment you were born. Both start from the same thing, your birth, but they ask different questions. Saju asks which elements were flowing when you arrived. Astrology asks where the sun, moon and planets were in the sky.

If you have ever wondered why your Korean friends talk about their saju before a big decision, this guide explains both systems in plain words.

What is saju?

Saju (사주) means “four pillars”. Your year, month, day and hour of birth each become a pillar made of two characters: a heavenly stem on top and an earthly branch below. That gives eight characters, which is why Koreans also say saju palja (사주팔자), “four pillars, eight characters”.

Every character belongs to one of the five elements: wood, fire, earth, metal and water. A saju reading looks at:

The five elements feed each other in a circle (wood feeds fire, fire makes earth...) and keep each other in check along the star.

What is Western astrology?

Western astrology draws a map of the sky at your birth, called a natal chart. The three placements most people start with are:

The signs are grouped into four elements: fire, earth, air and water.

Where they agree

The fun starts when you put the two side by side. Fire is fire in both systems. If your day master is fire and your sun sign is Leo or Aries, East and West are describing the same bright, expressive person, and that trait is usually very strong in you.

When they differ, it is not a contradiction. A common way to read it is that saju shows your inner root and astrology shows your outer style. Someone with a gentle water day master and a bold Aries sun might feel quiet inside but act quickly in the world.

How to read them together

  1. Find your day master and strongest element in your saju.
  2. Find your sun, moon and rising signs.
  3. Compare the elements. Notice where they match and where they pull in different directions.
  4. Look at what is missing. A missing element in saju often shows what you are drawn to in other people.

The saju calculator does steps 1 to 3 for you and adds a short comparison. For the full story, including your luck cycles and the year ahead, you can book a personal reading with me in English.

FAQ

Is saju the same as Chinese astrology?

Saju grew from the Chinese four pillars system (BaZi), and Koreans have used it in their own way for centuries. It is much more than your zodiac animal, which comes from only one of the eight characters in your chart.

Which is more accurate, saju or astrology?

Neither is better. They look at different things. Saju reads the rhythm of time and the balance of five elements, while astrology reads the planets. Many people find the clearest picture when the two agree.

Do I need my birth time for saju and astrology?

You can start with only your birth date. Your birth time adds the hour pillar in saju and your rising sign in astrology, and your birth city makes the rising sign precise.

Can I see my saju and zodiac signs together for free?

Yes. Foxy Unnie's free saju calculator shows your four pillars, five-element balance, and your sun, moon and rising signs side by side.
